Trump events to go virtual or be postponed after positive COVID-19 result

US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump have tested positive for COVID-19 after one of his most senior advisors Hope Hicks contracted the virus – with concerns about the 74-year-old’s age and weight.

White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany said President Trump’s symptoms were mild.

“I’m not going to get into the president’s symptoms exactly,” she said.

“He’s had mild symptoms, but he is hard at work, we’re having to slow him down a little bit.”

Sky News Political Reporter Annelise Nielsen said with the next presidential debate planned for October 15, it was highly unlikely it will be overhauled into a virtual event.

“All previously announced campaign events involving the president’s participation are in the process of being moved to virtual events or are being temporarily postponed,” President Trump’s team said in a statement.

Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden has gone to Michigan for an event following a negative COVID-19 test result.

“I’m happy to report that Jill and I have tested negative for COVID,” Mr Biden tweeted.

“Thank you to everyone for your messages of concern.

“I hope this serves as a reminder: wear a mask, keep social distance, and wash your hands.”
