We all carry darkness, no matter how much we would like to avoid admitting it.
We need to admit to ourselves that we are not so virtuous, moral and good human beings as we would like to think.
But if we can’t get rid of our negativity, then we could channel it into art. Wherever we are, at any moment, try and find something beautiful. A face, a line out of a poem, light through your window, film monologues, a lighthouse, first snow, autumn breeze.
What a paradox.
The things we don’t need to live—books, art, love, cinema, travel, small moments and so on— are the things we need to live.
They were, in and of themselves, reasons to stay alive.

Ai cũng mang trong mình bóng tối, bất kể chúng ta muốn tránh thừa nhận nó đến mức nào.

Nhưng nếu chúng ta không thể loại bỏ mọi suy nghĩ tiêu cực, ta có thể hướng nó vào nghệ thuật. Dù đang ở đâu, vào bất cứ thời điểm nào, hãy cố gắng tìm kiếm những điều đẹp đẽ. Một khuôn mặt, một dòng thơ, ánh nắng qua khung cửa sổ, độc thoại trong phim, ngọn hải đăng, tuyết đầu mùa, gió mùa thu…
Thật nghịch lý.
Những thứ chúng ta không cần để sống — sách, nghệ thuật, tình yêu, điện ảnh, du lịch, tiểu tiết cuộc sống v.v. — lại là những thứ chúng ta cần để sống.
Chúng là thứ giúp chúng ta sống tiếp.
