Positive action is not about giving people unfair advantages, lowering standards or ticking boxes – it’s about trying to attract the very best people to join us, and making us representative of our communities. Positive action is not the ‘latest fad’ – it’s here for the long term.
Transcript:
As West Yorkshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner, I am extremely proud of West Yorkshire Police and of our dedicated police officers and staff, who work tirelessly to keep all our communities safe and feeling safer.
Today, I am pleased to be supporting this positive action recruitment campaign and to be talking to you, who I hope will be the police officers and the leaders in our communities keeping all people safe and feeling safe into the future.
We face significant challenges here, but West Yorkshire’s strength lies in its richness and diversity and the strength of the police service lies in a truly diverse workforce that can meet these challenges and has the support, trust and confidence of all our communities.
I regularly engage with communities across West Yorkshire and I know that people want more, local visible policing but that they also want a police service that reflects and meets the needs and concerns of our communities.
So I am delighted to be providing the resources for the recruitment of 600 police officers this year whilst also ensuring that we have positive action recruitment so that West Yorkshire Police can better represent all the communities it seeks to serve.
I would like to ask you personally to seriously consider not only becoming part of West Yorkshire Police but to help shape the direction of this organisation to make sure that into the future the people who live and work here, their families and their communities, are safe and feel safe.
